I didn't read it that way at all. DD's offer was unexpected, and a
whole new idea. At first he showed disdain but did seem to be
thinking about it, and he had lowered his wand. Before we could see
what he would choose, matters were taken out of his hands. JKR says
he would not have killed DD. I think he is still redeemable.
