  listed as having died in 1945, the year Riddle graduated. We do know 
  that he had made at least one horcrux while working at B&B. He was 
  trying to get someone to tell him how to do it while at Hogwarts.

  I too question how he found out about the spell but also where did he
  hear the word horcrux to begin with.  Maybe during his summer trips to Knockturn Alley
  he found something but I'm pretty sure he did not hear it from anyone  that would be
  against the dark arts.
