Amiable Dorsai:
Good thought.  Another possibility is that he was simply nostalgic.
A trip on the Hogwarts Express would be a way to recapture the 
feeling of the last truly happy time of his life.

Did anyone else have the feeling that Lupin really wasn't asleep for
the whole trip?  I thought it odd, while reading the scene, that he
wasn't awakened by the kerfuffle with Draco.  After I finished the
book, I thought that perhaps he was feigning sleep in order to listen
in on Harry, to get some insight into James's and Lily's son. (Fodder
for you, Pippin, if you wish to ascribe harsher motives!)
