Actually he does get a first hand look, during the very 
year in question.  LV would have been privy to the whole 
conversation Quirrell had with Harry in front of the Mirror.

I wonder how Snape got out of that one?  Apparently LV 
didn't share the information with Bellatrix.  Surely she 
would have thrown the broom incident up to Snape had she 
known about it.  Or he would have included a rationalization 
for that incident in his answers to her charges of disloyalty 
if he knew she knew about it.
