This triggered a memory with me. 

Igor Stravinsky's ballet suite "The Firebird" is based on this fable. The evil King Kastchei 
keeps his soul in a casket and Ivan, the hero, has to destroy this with the help of the Fire Bird 
- does that produce echoes of a Phoenix?
