Geoff:
I haven't got my Latin dictionary with me on holiday - 
I couldn't fit my entire HPFGU associated bookshelf in 
the suitcase(!) but my gut reaction and linguistic sense 
makes me think that "kruk" is related to "crutch". 
The meaning you give certainly implies that.
