Funnily enough, when Harry does need the twins help they *do* flee.  
While their exit in OotP was thrilling and it saved them both from a 
flogging, it also meant that they left Harry and co. to deal with a 
mess they had a massive hand in stirring up.  It also meant that 
when Harry really needed help they weren't around to provide it.

So I guess Slytherins flee to protect their necks, and Gryffindors 
flee to protect their skins? <g>
