I don't think that there has to be a specefic reason. It just might have been a tactical decesion to leave the cloak behind, because it would be more useful for the order to have it then James.

But really this was just a simple plot device for JKR to give an ivisibilty coak to Harry. I don't think this is one of the points we we can read a lot into it. It is pretty much what it says. R.A.B destroyed the horcrux before James and Lily's death.
