I have speculated before, without having any canon basis whatsoever 
(except that Snape's father was a muggle (from Hermione's reseach) who 
apparently made his wife cower (from pensieve, assuming that Snape was 
the boy in the memory and those were his parents) that Snape grew up 
in the muggle world and knew Lily from that time in his life.  Wild 
speculation, I know, but what the heck ....
