In and of itself, it does not prove anything. All
sorts of really horrible people were known to raise to
the defence of their family.
Even uncle Vernon tries to protect his wife and son in
the face of what he has every reason to belive is a
mortal danger.

No one has ever said that James (or Sirius) were
unlikeable within their own circle, towards the people
they have considered a part of their pack. Now,
outside of the circle - I have yet to see a shred of
evidence.
