I think you give Snape entirely too much credit here. First of all, 
there is absolutely no evidence in canon that he concerns himself with 
students' (and more specifically Neville's) peace of mind. Quite the 
contrary, as far as we can see. Second, even if he did, in this 
instance there were much less elaborate (not mention less humiliating 
and embarrassing for Neville) ways to achieve such an objective. 
Absolutely no need to insult Neville for the umpteenth time in order 
to save him from a terrible vision of a Bogey Death Eater.
