I agree with this and just to add to it, many things that we consider 
part of Christianity predated the Christian faith.  Many things we 
associate with Christmas, as well as Easter, have roots in non-
Christian traditions. For instance, Easter is derived from the name 
of a pagan goddess of fertility. When Christianity was taking root, 
to try and encourage people to follow it, leaders of the church made 
Christmas at the same time as a pagan festival devoted to the winter 
solstice.
