Geoff:
Specifically the bumble bee IIRC, a connection which, as you suggest, has 
been pointed out before. 

There have been suggestions on several occasions that Dumbledore may 
take the Animagus form of a bee - pointing to various instances when a 
bee has been mentioned in canon.

Perhaps OT, but in the village where I now live, there is a house called 
"Dumbledory" which I believe was the bee keeper's house at one time.
