Perhaps in Book Seven McLaggan will turn out to be the Heir of
Gryffindor -- if that's the case I can't imagine him willing to be
helpful if Harry, Ron, and Hermione approach him for help. (According to
this theory of mine, Zacharias Smith is the Heir of Hufflepuff and
Marietta Edgecombe the Heir of Ravenclaw, and Book Seven will include
persuading these people, all of whom have issues with Harry and company,
to help unify Hogwarts and support the fight against Voldemort.)

As for the doxy eggs, when I read that I thought it was supposed to
suggest that McLaggan is the sort of fool who would take stupid bets and
dares, and can't be relied on to be ready on game day. (I know it's
wrong to apply American culture to these very British books, but
McLaggan reminded of the sort of sport-mad fraternity boy who would
swallow live goldfish on a dare.)
