I may be wrong but I don't remember anywhere that said that Lily did 
not try to defend herself and Harry.  I thought the point was that she 
was given a choice, she could have fled and saved herself and left 
Harry to Voldemort, but instead she chose to stay. It was that choice 
which was the sacrifice.
