Actually, yes, they were both in the Order during the first war with 
Voldemort. Whether either of them knew that Snape was helping the Order 
is unknown.

And, yes, we're told Snape owes, or thinks he owes a Life Debt to James 
for saving him from the werewolf. He appears to have transferred the 
the debt to Harry.(SS/PS) Or then again, perhaps DD was misleading with 
a bit of the truth.
