Geoff:
It is a knockout event in the sense that there is only one winner. There is no runner-up; 
there is no gold medal, silver medal and bronze medal. Winner takes all.

That was the thrust of my argument. I take your point that I've perhaps used the wrong 
phrase.

I must go and hit myself over the head with a water jug......
