Oh, you just kick-started my memory.  A hogshead is a unit of 
measurement.  Wikipedia link:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hogshead  A 
hogshead of something was an exact measurement, like a gallon or a 
dram.  In the song, they are going through a particular size of fire.  
In the pub, they're consuming liquid, a valid item to be measured by a 
hogshead.  (Holy mackerel!  A hogshead is 63 gallons!  That's a lot of 
ale!)
