"Strang und Durm" means in German 'storm and strife' and refers to a  late
18th/early 19th C. movement in literature, art, and drama (and, to a lesser
extent music) the dwelled on strong, towering emotions.  Think 'Sorrows of Young
Werther', Beethoven's 'Fidelio', etc.
