As much as I like Amiable Dorsai's theory about the Ray Charles CDs, I
really think that the explanation is a lot more mundane.  While the
books do refer to "splitting" the soul, is there anywhere that states
that the soul is split in half?  I always thought that smaller pieces
of soul break off when you do the killing, possibly size having some
correlation to the degree of evil committed, and the larger piece
remaining with the corporeal body while the smaller piece [at the
time] would be used to make the horcrux.

I don't know.  It's what I've always perceived as how that whole
soul-splitting thing worked.
