Well, at least you didn't have dear Dolores for your boss - I did! 
I'm here to say that she does exist in real life, even if JKR thinks 
she invented her. :-)

As for Percy, he has always been ambitious - note such events as his 
stopping at the bokshop to browse a book about former Hogwarts 
prefects who gained power. I don't honestly think he needed a lot of 
brainwashing.

Yes, what did happen to Penny? Maybe she saw him for what he was and 
dropped him.
