I'm very behind in my reading and I hope this reply isn't too late...
How about this: since it is through the victim's eyes that the
damage
is done(the victim must see a reflection of a basilisk's eyes to
become Petrified) the Mandrake Draft is applied to, or dropped into,
their startled, open peepers (dropped /through/ Nick's, I suppose).
