Crookshanks is known as a Kneazle. I think I saw that on JKR's site
a while back and said to check the "Fantastic Beasts and Where to
Find Them" about what it is.

As for Thestrals ... during the CoS (2nd book) Harry and Ron missed
the train so they didn't get to ride the carriages to Hogwarts, PoA
(3rd Book) he was too concerned about the Dementors I suppose, in GoF
it was raining so hard they all just rushed into the castle, in the
OoP they weren't in a rush and Harry had to look around for Ron and
Hermione and noticed them, but Ron and Hermione didn't see them.
