Except "House-elves come with big old manors and castles and places
like that; you wouldn't catch one in our house". Also, that's more
consistent with them being based on Brownies

There is every indication that House Elves are not personal property
but are in fact real property. (in the same sense of the word in which
land itself, or buildings, or fixtures within buildings, are real
property)
