I agree completely. One bit of canon that has always stuck out for me is
from Chapter 14, The Unforgivable Curses, from Goblet of Fire, as Fake Moody
is teaching the students about the Imperius curse:

'Er,' said Ron tentatively, 'my dad told me about one ... Is called the
Imperius curse, or something?'

'Ah, yes,' said Moody appreciatively. 'Your father *would* know about that
one. Gave the Ministry a lot of trouble at one time, the Imperius curse.'
 
This exchange grabbed me the first time I read GoF, and I find myself going
back to it again and again.
