as I understand it, there are 2 separate issues: Sirius is Harry's godfather
AND his appointed guardian. That he was Harry's godfather (and best man at
the wedding) made it such a terrible betrayal when he was believed to have
led LV to GH. That he was Harry's guardian meant that he could sign Harry's
permission slips, have Harry to live with him, and leave all his possessions
to him if he wishes. All things being equal, a godfather just has to look
out for the child and give him gifts and advice occasionally. (Leaving
aside any religious duty, as these were English wizards, and apparently
secular, like most Brits).
