It is quite possible that Fred and George saw Peter Pettigrew's name
and just assumed it was another student by the same name. They had no
reason to believe that he was alive.

I think that Fred and George were just looking to see where the teachers were so that they wouldn't get in trouble and did not think about the students on the map.
