I've been wondering, where was the diary after LV left Hogwarts?  Did  he 
take it with him or hide it there?  He apparently gave it to Lucius  before the 
Godric's Hollow disaster (maybe the same time he gave Mrs. Lestrange  the 
Slytherin necklace). While he was wandering the world he could have had it  with 
him, but who did he think would use it to open the Chamber? Possibly, he  had 
given up that idea entirely, but he would have wanted to keep it safe after  it 
became a Horcrux.
