I think you've hit on a very good point. Look how excited Harry was
to be going off to this magic school! The Big Friendly Giant was
cool, the train was cool, the Great Hall was cool. Things were going
to be so much better for him. Then there were a few surprises. The
Potions Master was horribe. Quite a bit of the magic was unpleasant,
the castle itself has some disagreeable habits. Magic not
only 'doesn't solve problems' it creates a few more.
It makes me think of our own magical thinking "things would be so
much better if only..." and I'm sure that's what JKR has in mind.
