Pat, delurking to add a small comment:

There's also the point that the Sorting Hat has been used by every
student that has ever come to Hogwarts, since it *became* the Sorting
Hat, and therefore has lost any special-ness that it might once have
had.  The other objects are special because they are one-of-a-kind and
rare: the Sorting Hat, it seems to me, would be considered by
Voldemort to be too common for something as precious as one seventh of
 his soul.
