I think your post is very astute, but I do disagree with you on this 
one point -- I don't see this "gloating" as anything new.  Back in SS 
when describing his use of the Mirror of Erised as part of the 
protection for the stone Dumbledore says something like "it was one of 
my more clever ideas, which between you and me is really saying 
something."  In OOP Dumbledore tells Harry that because he is so 
greatly intelligent his mistakes tend to be much larger than most 
people's as well.  He does say "forgive me" in HBP when talking about 
his prodigious skill.

Steven1965aaa, who tends to view Dumbledore's remarks about his own 
intelligence as Dumbledore having some playful fun.
