I've read that the derivation of the word "muggles" meaing marijuana is originally from Welsh.
The original word was "myglys", from "mwg" (smoke), hence something smokeable.
Not sure that there's any connection to JKR's word though. I'm sure she must have been asked it in an interview at some time!
