Canon doesn't pull any punches describing what Hermione did.
I wonder why so many readers feel compelled to soften it?

I think Cho felt partly responsible. Marietta only joined the DA because
Cho "made her." And I think that Cho would think it deeply disloyal to
Cedric's memory to beg favors from a tyrant, even if said tyrant happens 
to be the friend of a friend.
