I have to agree here. I think that if Lupin or Moody or even DD had taught him, he would have learned it. The biggest problem is that Snape and DD did not explain things to Harry. Harry was curious about his dreams. He wanted to know what was past the door. Had someone bothered to explain it to him, he would have then been able to focus on learning instead of defying what he was supposed to be doing.
