Geoff:
Maths is no joke. It is the standard UK English abbreviation for Mathematics. I taught Maths 
for over 30 years and was part of my school timetable team, building and printing the 
timetable books and wouldn't mind having a pound for every time I wrote or typed the word.

Math is very definitely of /those/ US English-isms such as "snuck" and "gotten".
