LOL.  And I always thought that it was acquired through the use a time
turner and investing in Vernon Dursley's drill company.  :-)

Seriously, I think JKRowling said that James' parents were well-off. 
I can't find the quote, but I seem to recall that there was some
speculation here recently that due to the Potters' wealth, James was a
spoiled rich kid.

Anybody have a clear canonical reference?
