But in the chapter "Lord Voldemort's request", Dumbledore clearly
implied, that the reason why Voldmeort wanted to have the position as
the DADA-teacher, was to get his hands at the Sword. He even
confirmed it later in the Horcruxes chapter, when Harry asked. That
means that at this time, which was even before James was born, the
sword was already in the Hogwarts' office.
That said, your theory is still pretty interesting. But it must have
been something else that was hidden in the cloak. Not the sword.
