Just a comment that I hope will help this discussion--

As Sirius told it, there was no trial. There may never have
any formal hearing at all. It may just have been Crouch
and Dumbledore passing in a hall--Crouch telling
Dumbledore that they caught Sirius at the scene of a
crime--witnesses say Peter was crying and accusing Sirius
of killing the Potters. Know anything about that?

And Dumbledore replying, "They were under a Fidelius
Charm and Sirius was the secret keeper. That must be
what Peter was talking about."

Crouch: Thanks, well, he's in Azkaban now.

Dumbledore: Good. When's the trial?

Crouch: Eh? Didn't hear that. Gotta run.
