What if Moody were the Auror assigned to protect them?  That would 
really explain what happened to him, because the Death Eaters would 
have to go through him to get to the Longbottoms.

> The fact we haven't been told how Moody received his injuries makes 
me think they are important to the story, specifically to the 
Longbottom storyline...That means Moody may yet have information about 
what happened to Neville the night of the torture, who the Secret 
Keeper was for the Longbottoms, and other mysteries yet to be resolved.
