Marianne:

I support Tonks' question. The debates and questions regarding the
roles, permissions or legal rights of guardians and/or godparents in
the WW have fallen back on whatever we know from our own world. We
can make assumptions about just how much legal authority a godparent
or a guardian have, but we're still flying blind. It certainly
seems that, since Sirius has been designated in canon as both
godfather and guardian, that these are two seperate roles. Sirius
tells Harry that he is Harry's guardian in PoA, in prelude to
offering Harry a home. It would seem from this that a guardian has
more legal rights to provide for a child than a godparent does.

I can't help but wonder if we will learn something more about the
rite of baptism and the appointment of guardians in the WW in Book
7. In two different interviews JKR shied away from discussing
Harry's baptism in depth, only to say that only James, Lily and
Sirius were there. (And a minister/priest/holy wizard?) I believe it
was in the TLC/Mugglenet interview where she said something like "I
can't tell you any more about this." What was it about this rite
that couldn't be more fully explained?
