Here's another theory, make of it what you will...

The Longbottoms arrived at Godric's Hollow with Hagrid in time to see Voldemort vanquished but too late to save the Potters.

Hagrid took Harry and went away.

The Longbottoms stayed and gave their story to the Ministry and the Wireless/Daily Prophet (_someone_ must have done so, after all, otherwise how would people have been so quickly and totally convinced that Voldemort was done for).

Therefore they were the logical ones for the surviving DEs to kidnap and torture for information, seing as the only other potential witness, Peter, was believed dead.
