Cyril here:

The question that comes to my mind is - until GoF - there was no
clarity about a curse rebounding on LV. All we know was that he had
tried to Kill Harry, and the curse did not work.

Using MG's words from PS/SS

Quote from SS/PS - * That's not all. They're saying he tried to kill
the Potter's son, Harry. But -- he couldn't. He couldn't kill that
little boy. No one knows why, or how, but they're saying that when he
couldn't kill Harry Potter, Voldemort's power somehow broke -- and
that's why he's gone *

No question about a rebounded curse - just one that did not work as
expected.

Even in CoS, this is supported by Diary Riddle not knowing anything
about how Harry had defeated him. If the rebounded curse was public
knowledge.. Ginny would probably know.. and hence Diary Riddle would
have got it from her..

Instead he asks Harry about it...

Quote from CoS - * Twice - in your past, in my future - we have met.
And twice I failed to kill you. How did you survive? Tell me
everything <snip from quote>

No one knows why you lost your powers when you attacked me, said Harry
abruptly. I don't know myself. But I know why you couldn't kill me.
Because my mother died to save me. My common Muggle-born mother, he
added, shaking with suppressed rage. She stopped you killing me...*

IIRC (and please correct me if this is not correct) - the first
knowledge we get about Harry surviving the AK curse is when fake Moody
demonstrated it in GoF. Well he would probably have learned of Harry
surviving the curse from his boss directly... allowing him to make
that statement...

LV is the first one I remember who actually talks about the rebounded
curse - at his rebirthing...

* I miscalculated, my friends, I admit it. My curse was deflected by
the woman's foolish sacrifice, and it rebounded upon myself. Aaah
pain
beyond pain, my friends; nothing could have prepared me for it. I was
ripped from my body*...

So LV is the one who informs us about the rebounded curse... He also
clues us into the fact that his body was left behind at the scene of
the crime... which would have been the only clue to Wizards that he
was probably *DEAD* way back in PS/SS time. People were celebrating
because the dead body of LV had been seen... they know nothing else.

Any thoughts...

Can anyone point me in the right direction, ie canon, to the DE's
having a different version in HBP about why Harry survived.

PS. Diego - thanks for the note about Harry and Snape having different
views on handling Dementors. Missed the implications of that
earlier... Any idea on what options Snape was recommending as
alternatives to the Patronus Charm?

Cyril, thinking he needs to do another re-read of HBP since he seems
to have missed out many pieces earlier.
