to believe that she feels evil is created, not born. Barty seems very
likely to have been someone similar to Regulus, caught up in something
he regretted. But unlike Regulus, Barty got arrested for a crime he
probably didn't commit, and if so the injustice of it turned him from
morally weak into something more evil.
Carol responds:
I've already cited evidence of the thorough corruption of Barty Crouch
Jr. as Crouch!Moody, the man who framed Harry so that Wormtail could
use Harry's blood to restore Voldemort's body, after which Voldemort
would murder Harry. I've also argued that he must have learned the
Unforgiveable Curses (which require a desire to hurt or kill or
mentally dominate others) while he was a DE.
I'm not sure why you want to defend him, aside from the tragedy of his
father's apparent failure to love him resulting in a boy becoming a
Death Eater. We have his pleas in court, which could be pure cowardice
(notice that Bellatrix Lestrange says that "we alone were loyal" and
does not exclude Barty--wouldn't she do so if he weren't as guilty as
she and the Lestrange brothers of torturing the Longbottoms?), and we
have Dumbledore's statement that he doesn't know whether Barty was
guilty or not, but we also have his later behavior--his confession
under Veritaserum that all he wanted to do after he recovered from his
illness was escape and look for his master and we have Barty Sr.
talking to "Weatherby" when the Imperius Curse is wearing off saying
that he and his wife plan to celebrate his son's twelve OWLs by having
dinner with the Fudges. That sounds to me like the memory of a real
event and not at all the attitude of a father who didn't love his son.
As for Sirius Black's speculation that Barty Sr. didn't spend enough
time with his son and paid the penalty, that's pure speculation from a
witness who has reason to view Barty Sr. less than charitably.
Can you provide any canon *evidence* that Barty Jr. was innocent and
regretted his involvement in the DEs or is it just wishful thinking?
(We already have two repentant DEs, Severus Snape (if he's DDM) and
Regulus Black, and Barty Jr.'s return to Voldemort in GoF makes him an
unlikely third.)
Carol, who thinks both Crouches illustrate the corrosive effects of
Unforgiveable Curses on the soul and mind
