Carol responds:
True, she doesn't refute the possibility. But how could he have been
there? James shouts, "He's here!" meaning that Voldemort is here, not
"They're here," meaning Voldemort and one or more DEs. (Not that I
think Snape was a loyal DE; quite the contrary, but he would have had
to pose as one if he was present.) Wormtail, who was almost certainly
present, could have hidden in rat form. Snape could not have hidden at
all without an Invisibility Cloak (unless he's an Animagus, and surely
we'd have had some hint if he were). And if he'd been at Godric's
Hollow to warn the Potters, having somehow learned the secret from
Peter Pettigrew (who'd have no motive for revealing it to him--no, I
don't buy the note to Dumbledore idea), Voldemort would have killed
Snape along with James.

I think it's most likely that Snape was at Hogwarts when the Potters
were killed, as he tells Bellatrix in "Spinner's End." (What he
doesn't tell her is what he and Dumbledore said and did on that night,
which is what I want to know.)

Carol, thanking Alla for the heads up and happy to be right on both counts
