A lot of those short stories have been filmed for the series 'Tales of the Unexpected' (back in the seventies) and I still remember being allowed to watch those each week and being utterly enthralled and scared at the same time, because those stories were so scary in a non-graphic, hoist-on-their-own-petard, Unescapable Doom kinda way...
