I was just skimming through the boards and found this thread.  I
haven't read all the entries, but I did want to make a comment.  If
this has already been mentioned, I apologize.  I just haven't had time
to read everything on the subject.

I think the picture on the new cover does indeed look to be an
amphitheatre, but I believe it is more symbolic than literal.  I think
it represents a final showdown.  Now that Voldemort is back and the
Wizarding community is aware of it, the stage is set for the final
showdown between him and Harry and everyone will be anxiously
watching.  So I don't think it's an actual place, but more of the mood
of the book.

Just my theory.
