Ceridwen:
Snape went to Dumbledore before the attack.  He was a spy (GoF).  If he 
had turned after Voldemort vaporized, then there would have been no one 
or nothing to spy on.  He began teaching at Hogwarts two months before 
the attack (OotP) which means he had been in contact with Dumbledore 
before then.  I doubt if Dumbledore would have given a teaching post to 
a then-unrepentant Death Eater.
