Excellent post, Pippin.  After my last post, I did think that possibly
the IS overheard a DA member say something like "Look, they're going
into the forest," although this assumes that the window they looked
out of was in the same room as the IS fight.  Still, this is a
possible way for Snape to have learned for certain that they went into
the forest, but as you say, he probably wouldn't have found this out
for some time.
