I agree with this, and besides, he would have been (as he was) hunted down
if he had escaped before. Where would he have gone? Nobody believed him,
and this wouldn't have changed had he broken out - in fact, the tales about
him just became more hair-raising, thanks to the wonderful media. When
caught, he would doubtless have been Kissed. However, while being condemned
to a terrible life in Azkaban, he did at least have the opportunity to
transform sometimes. It was only when he realised the danger to Harry that
he risked everything to escape.
