Pippin:
The issue here seems to be the doctrine of 'implied malice' (lawyers
on the list will no doubt correct me if I have this wrong). If
Riddle was acting with a conscious disregard for life and with the
knowledge that his actions might endanger someone, he might be
guilty of murder even if he had no premeditated intent to kill.
The Marauders might be guilty under the same doctrine if Lupin
had killed someone during their excursions into Hogsmeade, or for
the Prank itself.
